Root canal therapy has an undeserved reputation. With modern techniques and anesthesia, root canals are no more uncomfortable than getting a filling — and they save your natural tooth while relieving the pain of infection.

When Is a Root Canal Needed?

A root canal is needed when the soft tissue (pulp) inside your tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to:

  • Deep decay or large cavities
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
  • A crack or chip in the tooth
  • Trauma to the tooth

Symptoms may include severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, darkening of the tooth, or swelling and tenderness in nearby gums.

The Procedure

During root canal treatment, Dr. Pinney removes the infected pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the canals inside the root, fills the space with a biocompatible material, and seals the tooth. The tooth is then typically restored with a crown to protect it and restore full function.

After Treatment

Most patients return to normal activities the next day. Some mild soreness may occur for a few days, easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
